How do you get through a long cardio workout?  What do you think about when you run for 1-2 hours?  Those are type of questions I have received in the past.  During long sessions, some people listen to their favorite music.  Others will listen to audio books and some runners, like myself, will do podcasts. Then there are some crazy folks who listen to the birds chirping while running outdoors. :)

Just kidding, sometimes I actually unplug and enjoy the sounds of the outdoors too.

I used to listen to music, but after so many miles and hours on the road and now the bike, it got old.  Over a year or so ago I switched over to podcasts as my entertainment during runs and have decided to save my favorite music for race days only.

The reason why I enjoy podcasts is because I typically can learn a lot from the guests that are on the different shows I listen to. There is still so much knowledge to obtain from people who have been through a lot more than me and I also get good tips on new books to read.

The best part about podcasts is that there are so many topics that are covered by various people that you should be able to find one that keeps you entertained during the day, walking, cycling or running.

My favorite podcasts to get me through long running and/or cycling sessions are:
(Please search for these on your podcast feed like iTunes, etc.)

  • Rich Roll - He is a famous triathlete, author and vegan.  His book is one of my favorites and I love listening to hear from all his guests (nutritionists, chefs, authors, fitness trainers, triathletes, cyclists, runners, etc.)
  • Endurance Planet - Podcast talks about fueling, nutrition, race day preparation, injuries, etc for endurance athletes.  (I am not a fan of the episodes when Ben Greenfield is on.)
  • Ultra Runner Podcast - Ultra runners are usually on the show talking about their running and unbelievable distances they are running.
  • Zen and the Art of Triathlon - A very different type of podcast that talks about triathlon training, nutrition, etc.  I have an open mind and I love picking up little things from various people.  My only negative feedback is the sound quality.  However, it is free, right?  So I won't complain.
  • Trail Runner Nation - They have trail and ultra-marathon runners as guests and talk about their experiences.  They also have guests talking about nutrition, exercise and fueling during long runs.
  • Running Academy - Good podcast for beginner and experienced runners.  The hosts invites various guests on the show to cover various topics including nutrition, running, injuries, etc.  My only gripe against this show is that it is way too scripted.  Loosen up buddy.
  • Marathon Academy - Good podcast for beginner marathon runners.  My big negative on this one is that parts of it is also too scripted.
My absolute favorite podcast that has no relation to running, fitness, etc is the one called the "Joe Rogan Experience".  I like his humor and his guests are usually comedians, thought provokers and/or MMA personalities and make his 2-3 hour podcast go by fast.  I listen to this one on long runs because sometimes it is just good to just run and laugh and make the drivers wonder what is wrong with me.

So what are some of your favorite podcasts?  Please share them in the comments so others can be introduced to new shows.

Just in case you missed it, please see the link below at the bottom of the post there are two audio clips where you can hear me talking about my training sessions.
