greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high

Did you make some big goals in 2014?  Trying to lose weight?  Stop smoking?  Stop eating sweets?  Every January most people make resolutions or goals.  Some people give up on them by the end of the month.  Others keep going.  For the ones that are still working and heading toward their goals, I applaud you

It is not easy to stick to a new routine when everyone else is not making an effort to change their lives.  In the U.S. January or February can be challenging months due to snow and cold weather.  There are hundreds of excuses a person can use to not exercise or not eat right.  It is easy to give up.

It is never easy getting out of your comfort zone when making a major change to your life.   I know it takes discipline, effort and commitment to work on what you are trying to accomplish.  But you deserve to keep going.

If you are still on the "changing my life road", pat yourself on the back.  Many people take the easy road and go back to where they started.

If you didn't make any resolutions but you know someone who did and is still chugging along, call, text and congratulate them...they deserve it.

big dreams that challenge me

Make a Big Goal

When you are ready, I challenge you to make a goal that scares the heck out of you.
  • One that will make your nervous.
  • One that will take you out of your comfort.
  • One that wakes you up at night.
  • One that makes you doubt if you will be able to reach it.
  • One that will make you WANT to stick to a training plan so you have the best chance to meet your goal.
  • One that others will laugh at you about.
This type of goal will take you to another level.

If you don't have any fitness, health, major life goals or some type bucket list that you are truly working on, what are you doing with the life you have been granted?

Are you going through life just to exist? Are you throwing away a perfect chance to establish story making memories?

Are you overlooking opportunities to create stories you can share with your kids or grand kids?

Will you ever be brave enough to make some goals that might challenge you to succeed? Or possibly even...FAIL?

There is nothing wrong with failing.  If you allow it, you can learn from failing.

Some people point and laugh at the people who create weight loss and stop smoking goals on January 1st every year. I never have done this because at least they were brave enough to start. Yes most of them "fail" but I applaud the people who make new year resolutions. They at least realized they needed to make a change.

40/40 On My 40th Birthday Goal
Toward the end of last year, I made a goal for my 40th birthday that I will be cycling 40 miles and running 40 miles on my birthday weekend in March . As the months have gotten closer, it has made me nervous because this will be the furthest I have run and because I honestly do not know if I will be able to do both in the same day. But guess what? I love that feeling.  I am embracing the challenge.

I decided to make the "40/40 on my 40th birthday" goal because that will drive me to stay disciplined with my workout routines. Yes as the miles are adding up, it is getting hard, but for now, I would not have it any other way.

Have you ever made a goal that kept you up at night?

When I leave this life, I will exit with a smile because I know I will die with memories.  Or at least die trying to make memories.

  1. Another inspirational post Fred, thanks! Just shared on FB too. :-)

    1. Hi Shells! I really appreciate you reading it and sharing it. I hope you are doing well. Have a great week!

  2. You really make a few good points here. I have been one to refrain from making resolutions because I didn't want to fail. But you are right! In failing you do learn something, and if you don't try you don't get the chance for the reward.
It's been a while since i have made a goal that kept me up at night, but I'm ready to try some hard things!
    Thanks for motivating us.

    1. No problem. You are doing the right thing with your goal. Resistance and fear will try to stop you but that is when you should know you are heading in the right direction.

Like I said above, honestly I have no idea if I am training right or if I will succeed in my 40 miler and 50K but I am willing to move forward and succeed or fail.
