Why did I write a book...
For the money? No.
For the fame? Nope.
Because I am an expert at weight loss? No.
Will it be a best-selling book? No.
I simply wrote the book to share my story. Hopefully, it will help a few people that can relate to my story and will help them overcome their weight loss struggles.
I also wanted to accomplish one of my biggest goals and fears, writing and publishing a book.
If you haven't heard I have written my first book, "Losing Weight and Keeping It Off: Life After Losing 100 Pounds". I will be self-publishing the e-book and it should be available on Amazon within a day after this blog post is released. It will then be available on other e-book retailers over the next few weeks.
It will be an easy read. It is less than 100 pages and not filled with research results. It won't be about some new diet theory. I won't be promising you ways how to lose weight. It is basically my weight loss memoir.
So let's go back in time a bit...I drafted this book over a year and half ago. I worked on it for about 1 week and then I laughed at myself and said, "Who the heck will read this garbage?" So I stopped. In reality, it was the fear of what others would say, etc.
Then, multiple things happened over the last 2 years...
I wrote more blog posts and I became a little better at writing. When you do things and work at it, you get better at it. No, you may never be perfect or the best, but you definitely improve.
I received more emails or comments about how some of my writings helped people get through the day. Others it helped them improve their lives. No better feeling than hearing that. I then began to think maybe this blog was worth working on.
I was about to lose my job. After December 19th, I was going to be unemployed for the first time since I was about 14 years old. At that point I had no idea what my next step in life was going to be. If I ever was going to have time to write a book, it was going to be now. (FYI, I start a new job on January 5th, 2015.)
I found James Altucher. I believe I first heard about him on the Rich Roll podcast. He was talking about how people need to live their lives and not someone else's. He was also on their promoting the Choose Yourself and The Power of No books. What I heard on this podcast and what I read, really opened my eyes. I needed to work on myself in all aspects of my life. I must find new ways to reach new dreams. In his own podcasts, he also kept challenging people to write their own books and walked through the process. I felt like he was talking to me.
I received an email that made me realize I need to write this book. The person said (paraphrasing here)..."Fred, I found your blog and I have read a lot of your stories and information. I am 16 years old and almost 400 pounds. I just quit school because I am tired of kids picking on me. I am going to start eating better and lose weight because of you." I was in the airport and was about to leave on a business trip when I read this. Tears began as my flight was being called. I related to his struggles and knew where he was coming from. I am glad he is starting his own journey.
It was time to share my weight loss battles throughout life in a "book format".
Did everything go my way after I made the decision? No.
Since May, I have been struggling with knee issues. Eventually in November my orthopedic said I have a very bad case of arthritis in my knee. His advice...Stop running. Only do cycling, swimming and weight lifting.
According to him, I am supposed to follow this plan for a very long time. Before Mr. Bad News left the room, he also added, "Endurance running will not be part of your future."
Can a runner hear any worse news? Ugh.
During these months I regained some weight because of no running. However, I definitely can still say I have lost over 100 pounds and kept it off.
Yes, of course some of the weight gain is due to bad eating, but honestly it is not too bad. I also weight lift 5-6 days a week and now I am cycling about 4-5 times per week. I will begin to lose some of the new weight.
Even though I came across some roadblocks, I continued on the path to write and publish this book.
Eventually my first rough draft was completed at the beginning of September. I then began to read and edit. Read and edit. Add more content and edit more.
My goal was to release this before the end of the year for various reasons. People buy books right after they receive their new tablets. People buy weight loss books before the New Year. I was running out of time...
(I will go over the self-publishing process more in a future post.)
Overall, it was not all smooth and fun. The entire process took more time and was harder than I expected.
However, within a few days I can finally say I am an author and self-publisher.
Thank you to everyone that help me edit this book. It became a much better book because of the work and time you contributed to it. I can't thank you (especially Darcey and Justin) enough.
Also thanks to the professionals on Fiverr who helped with ebook covers, editing, formatting, preparing and uploading this book. A special thanks to Clefmeister who helped me with the formatting and uploading to the different ebook retailers. There is no way this would this have been completed in December without his help.
Thank you also to Google+ people and Facebook friends and family who helped me pick the final black and red cover. I am glad I decided to ask for feedback, I believe this cover was the best one to go with. The final book cover was designed by pro_ebookcovers on Fiverr.
I am minutes away from hitting publish on Amazon. Once again fear has set in. Should I leave it in draft mode and never let anyone see my work? No.
I have learned from running and past experiences to not let fear hold me back. This new feeling is just excitement. I am excited that I finally overcame the fear of writing a book. I am excited others will finally read it.
A new chapter in my life is beginning. I will have to wait and see how it ends.
If you purchase the book, thank you. Please let me know what you think. More importantly, PLEASE leave a honest review wherever you buy it.
UPDATE: Book was just published on Amazon. You can buy it here.
